German Proficiency Levels (CEFR):
A1 – Beginner: 2 to 3 months
The A1 level is perfect for absolute beginners. If you take intensive courses of 3-4 hours per week, you can reach this level in 2 to 3 months. You’ll learn basic vocabulary, grammar, and common phrases for simple situations.
A2 – Elementary: 3 to 5 months
At A2, you will be able to handle daily situations more comfortably, like shopping or asking for directions. This level typically takes around 3 to 5 months of regular study with some review and practice in context.
B1 – Intermediate: 6 to 9 months
At this level, you’ll be able to understand simple texts, write letters, and participate in more fluent conversations. It usually takes 6 to 9 months of consistent study with more in-depth exercises and immersion activities.
B2 – Upper Intermediate: 9 to 12 months
Reaching B2 allows you to understand complex texts and engage in more detailed discussions. This requires 9 to 12 months of focused study, including advanced conversation and complex readings.
C1 – Advanced: 12 to 18 months
C1 is for those who want to master German for professional or academic use. It involves consistent immersion, with regular hours of study focused on specialized topics and longer texts. Typically, this level takes between 12 and 18 months to reach.
C2 – Proficient: 18 months to 2 years
The C2 level is full proficiency. You’ll be able to communicate effortlessly in any context. It usually takes 18 months to 2 years of constant practice and immersion to achieve this level.
